An IDP in the US is essentially a certified translation of your American driver's license. It is issued by organizations such as AAA (American Automobile Association) or AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance).

Photo Requirements:

• 2 identical color passport-style photos.
• Size: 2x2 inches (51x51 mm).
• White or light background.
• You must sign your name on the back.

1. In person: Visit a AAA office with your license and two photos. It takes about 15–20 minutes.
2. By mail: Send the application, a copy of your license, and photos by mail.
3. Online: AAA now allows you to upload a digital photo via their website; they will print it and attach it to the permit themselves.

If you are applying for a driver's license for the first time, this must always be done in person.

Photo:

• You cannot bring your own photo. You will be photographed directly at the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) office.

Appearance Requirements:

• Glasses: In most states (e.g., New York, California), glasses must be removed, even if you wear them at all times.
• Headwear: Allowed only for religious or medical reasons, and the face must be completely visible.
• Expressions: Usually, a "neutral facial expression" or a slight smile is required (depending on the state).

Process:

1. Submit your documents (ID, SSN, proof of address)
2. Pass the required tests
3. Proceed to the camera for your official photo

Rules here depend on the reason for replacement and how long ago your previous photo was taken.

A) Renewal:

• Online: Many states allow you to renew your license online if it has not been expired for more than 1–2 years. In this case, the DMV uses your old photo already on file.
• In Person: You will have to appear in person and take a new photo if:
  • You are upgrading to a REAL ID.
  • A long time has passed (usually every 8–16 years).
  • Your appearance has changed significantly.

B) Name Change or Data Updates:

• Process: Almost always in person. You must present the original document (Marriage Certificate, Court Order) and update your information with the SSA first.
• Photo: The DMV often takes a new photo because a completely new document is issued. You cannot bring your own photo.

C) Loss or Theft:

• Usually, a duplicate can be ordered online. In this case, the old photo from the database will be used.
