It’s safe to have a valid passport about you at all times while traveling. You never know when it might come up handy. As an adult, you should have a passport, a passport card, or any other WHTI-compliant travel documents when reentering the US by sea. Please take a government-issued photo ID with you, such as a REAL ID, enhanced driver’s license, native American photo ID, US military or merchant mariner document, NEXUS card, or a trusted traveler program card.
If you travel as a permanent resident from Canada, please pack your Permanent Resident Card and a valid passport from the country of origin with you.
Do your kids need a passport to fly to the Bahamas?
For minors, there are slightly different rules. Those under the age of 16 can return to the US and leave the Bahamas on a cruise with their birth/ naturalization/ citizenship certificates. The proof of citizenship covers an original or certified copy of a government-issued birth certificate. However, if they fly out of the US or come back by air travel, the rules are strict here: every child needs a valid passport book.
Does my passport have to be valid for six months to go to the Bahamas?
There are a few passport requirements to follow for US citizens traveling to the Bahamas. For the local authorities, it’s enough for your passport to be valid for two months beyond the time of entry of your trip to the Bahamas. It should preserve its validity for the whole period of stay and accommodate two blank pages for arrival and departure stamps. With that said, you need to check the up-to-date information on requirements with your airline before you leave. Most of them strictly require your passport to be valid six months from the date of your departure from the islands.
Canadians traveling to the Bahamas must have a passport valid for at least three months beyond the date of expected departure from the Bahamas.
It’s important for travelers of any age to follow the passport requirements set by the US Department of State and the local authorities when visiting the Bahamas. There are some applicable to cruises and the others are for flying over to the paradise island.
It’s not generally required to have a passport when visiting the islands by sea for citizens traveling from different countries. Still, it’s a good idea to have a passport with you in case of an emergency.
The passport rules are consistently regulated. Be sure to double-check the regulations as well as any local warnings on safety before you travel to your destination.
